Peace building and conflict resolution in local communities that have been exposed to torture and organised violence in Zimbabwe
International project
Country: South Africa
Contact person: Anne Bay Paludan
Partner: Solidarity Peace Trust (SPT)
Project description: SPT in South Africa
focuses especially on the Zimbabwean refugees who have been victims
of torture and organised violence (TOV). The cooperation with RCT
includes documentation of TOV, advocacy and psychosocial support
for the victims of TOV.
Partner presentation: SPT is an NGO registered
in South Africa. The trustees are church leaders of Southern
Africa, who are all committed to human rights, freedom and
democracy. The objective of the organisation is to assist
individuals and organisations in southern Africa to build
solidarity in the pursuit of justice, peace and social
equality.
Context: Zimbabwe's history is characterised by
political dispute, repression and widespread human rights
infringements, which include homicide, torture, violence and other
kinds of inhuman treatment of which most cases are not
investigated. Poverty and unemployment prevail in this country.
Also in the neighbouring country, South Africa, the situation is
difficult for the large number of Zimbabwean migrants, some of whom
have been victims of TOV. They are exposed to xenophobic violence
and only have very limited access to legal aid and health care.
