RCT regards education as an important part
of the fight against torture and therefore RCT uses its training
experience to build up the capacity for rehabilitation in Denmark
and abroad.
Among others, RCT is educating:
- Medical doctors
- Medical students
- Psychologists
- Psychology students
- Social advisors
- Nursing teachers
- Physiotherapy teachers
The long-term objective is to enable the professional groups
within e.g. the Danish health services to identify torture
survivors and, based on the knowledge about the reactions of
torture survivors, to plan treatment and after-treatment in
accordance with the special needs of this group of patients.
The education is practised at different levels: at the basic
education of students, at the supplementary education of health
professionals with experience in treating torture survivors, and at
the more advanced levels of education where the main objective is
research and development, e.g. the guidance of Ph.D.-students.
Education as
prevention
RCT has unique experience of documentation and training and
utilises education as a means to ensure that continued attention is
paid to torture and human rights as well as engagement in
democracy.
RCT's vision is to use its expertise to influence a wide group
of people who must learn about torture and how torture can be
prevented.
RCT is educating:
- Police students and other police personnel
- The judicial system
Obligation to
educate
In 1987 Denmark signed the UN-Convention against Torture and
other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.
Article 10 of the convention states:
"Each State Party shall ensure that education and
information regarding the prohibition against torture are fully
included in the training of law enforcement personnel, civil or
military, medical personnel, public officials and other persons who
may be involved in the custody, interrogation or treatment of any
individual subjected to any form of arrest, detention or
imprisonment."
Request for
education
RCT welcomes requests for education from relevant professional
groups and other professionals who in their daily work may meet
refugees who have been exposed to torture and therefore need to
know more about torture and its consequences as well as treatment
of torture survivors. Requests will be met according to the
availability of time and resources.
