About RCT

How many torture survivors are offered treatment at RCT?
RCT offers treatment to approximately 150 torture survivors or family members of torture survivors per year. The treatment is free of charge for the client.

How does a refugee who has been subjected to torture or organised violence enter into the treatment programme at RCT? The clients are referred to treatment at RCT by their own general practitioners or the social services.

What is the duration of treatment at RCT? A course of treatment will typically last from 12 to 18 months.

Will torture survivors recover after treatment?
Most clients treated at RCT regain their self-respect and self-reliance to such a degree that they can function better in their every-day lives. But quite often the after-effects of the torture inflicted on the clients are so severe that they are physically and/or mentally invalidated for the rest of their lives.

What are the countries of origin of the torture survivors? Torture occurs all over the world and many people flee the countries in which torture is undertaken. In the 1970s, Western Europe mainly received political refugees from Latin America. During the 1980s, the refugees arrived from Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Since the 1990s, the refugees have mainly come from the Middle East, Somalia and former Yugoslavia.

Does RCT offer training or education on torture and organised violence?RCT offers training and education to social and health professionals, namely MD's, psychologists, social workers, nurse teachers and physiotherapy teachers and students of these professions. Furthermore, RCT offers training and education to police staff and personnel in the legal profession.

How is RCT funded?
RCT is a self-governing institution and thus depends on funding from a number of contributors. The main contributor is the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Danish Ministry of the Interior and Health, but RCT is also supported by funds, foundations, grants and private individuals.
