FAQ: Should perpetrators be punished?

Yes. First of all, the torture perpetrators must know that the chances of getting away with torture are becoming more and more scarce. Thus prevention of torture can take place. Secondly, prosecution is important for the torture survivors and their families. If the perpetrators are prosecuted, a series of mental restrictions are removed and it becomes possible for the torture survivors to get rid of hateful and destructive feelings directed towards the past.
