Implementing the Istanbul Protocol

With the overall aim of assessing how a rehabilitation centre like the Rehabilitation and Research Centre for Torture Victims (RCT) can contribute to the fight against impunity, the purpose of this paper is to explore to what extent medical documentation can be added to the rehabilitation process already in place.

RCT Author (No longer employed at RCT): Lise Worm

A pilot study was performed in the fall of 2005 at RCT with the aim of exploring possibilities of adding a medico-legal documentation component to this rehabilitation process. The authoritative document on this subject - The Istanbul Protocol - is not widely applied; one reason might be that it is too time-consuming and extensive. This paper suggests using a database system with a combination of gathering and registering information.
