The response to torture varies individually, including rates of
PTSD. This paper reports a study of resilience factors in order to
explain such differences. Seventyfive people, mainly from
Africa, traumatised in a wide range of ways underwent a
semistructured intake interview and filled in self-reported
assessment of resilience factors like social support, cognitive
appraisal and coping styles. While bivariate analyses showed
limited association with PTSD, multivariate analyses revealed that
emotion focused coping styles may increase the likelihood of
developing severe PTSD symptoms.
