Mental health among torture survivors : cultural background, refugee status and gender / Schubert, Carla C.; Punamäki, Raija-Leena.
Nordic journal of psychiatry ; vol. 65, no. 3, 2011. - p. 175-182

Seventy-eight torture survivors from Middle East, Central Africa, Southern Asia and South East Europe, who sought help in a Finnish centre, were interviewed and assessed using Impact of Event Scale-R and HSCL-25. Results showed that PTSD occurred more frequently among Southern Europe torture survivors compared to those from more collective cultures in the Middle East, Asia and Africa. While the study material is small, the paper contributes to the important question of cross-cultural differences in the manifestation of health consequences of torture.
