RCT partner killed

Published 10.12.2010

On December 8, Emilia Quan Staackman body was found murdered. She was a sociologist and a worker of the Centre of Studies and Documentation of Western frontiers in Guatemala.

To this fact, RCT and its partner in Guatemala, the Office of Human Rights of the Archbishop of Guatemala (ODHAG), highly condemn this assassination. By a paradox of fate, Emilia Quan was a consultant at ODHAG in 2008 and she developed a research about violence in Guatemala with a high sense of commitment. Her death adds to the thousands of deaths perpetrated in this irredeemable country.

In addition, RCT and ODHAG demand the investigation of this assassination and take the responsible of this abominable crime into court. RCT and ODHAG also express our solidarity to her family and friends who suffered such an important loss.

- Emilia's death is a great tragedy for the fight against torture and for human rights. Let us hope this ultimate sacrifice is not in vain, says Jan Ole Haagensen, Director of RCT's International department.

In Latin America and Guatemala, RCT focuses its work on creating new knowledge and institutional changes to strengthen the efforts against torture and organised violence. The objective is to change the conditions that render human rights violations possible.
