Killing of forensic doctor is an attack on the fight against torture
RCT is profoundly concerned about the killing of forensic expert, Dr. Germán Antonio Ramírez Herrera in Ecuador July 6.
Dr. Germán Ramírez has documented cases on extrajudicial
killings and torture in Ecuador as well as criminal activity. He
was killed July 6, 2010 under unclear circumstances. He worked in a
national network of independent experts founded by the former RCT
partner organization PRIVA, Fundación para la Rehabilitación
Integral de Víctimas de Violencia.
On the same day of the killing, PRIVA presented a number of cases
documented by Dr. Germán Ramírez to the United Nations Special
Rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Summary or Arbitrary Executions,
Philip Alston. Among other, he had documented cases of torture and
executions inside the prison where he worked.
RCT regards the killing as an attack on all organizations dedicated
to the eradication of torture. RCT is deeply concerned about the
security of the independent health and legal experts in the network
and of the staff working at PRIVA.
AT RCT we would like to express our deepest sympathy with the
family, colleagues and friends of Dr. Germán Ramírez.
