Fire in Honduran prison underlines the need for Danish presence in Latin America

Published 22.02.2012

On Valentine’s Day, a fire broke out in a prison in Comayagua two hours north of the capital Tegucigalpa. The prison capacity was 400 inmates, but at the time of the fire some 851 were behind bars. Two days later the death toll rose to 377.

Police is being blaimed for the fire by inmates who claim that prison guards shot at them as they tried to escape the flames. The corrupt police who is in charge of the Honduran prison system is also deeply involved in organized crime and drug trafficking. The prison fire in Honduras shows that there is no rule of law in the country and underlines the need for international involment in the country. If Honduras which has one of the highest murder rates pr capita is forgotten by the international community it will most likely become a full blown dictatorship.
