Falanga project: Examination of torture survivors exposed to falanga torture

Among former patients 30 male subjects who had been tortured with falanga were invited via mail to participate in this study. 18 responded positively but it was only possible to examine 11 of these. Eleven matched controls were recruited in the Arab community in Copenhagen, all immigrants from the Middle East. All 22 subjects were clinically assessed at RCT and Frederiksberg Hospital and examined with Ultrasonic imagining. The clinical results will be presented at the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) in august 2005. An article is in process.

Master of Science project: Torture survivors' pain pattern, body function and activity

From 2000 to 2005, 72 clients were examined by physiotherapists at RCT according to a standardised protocol including examination of pain, body function and activities, sequelae after falanga and suspension by the arms. The results will be presented in a thesis and in articles.

Clinical experience:
Since 1971 I have worked with the rehabilitation of patients. My professional interest and clinical experience in musculo-skeletal pain problems has made me an expert in the field. Also I master methods in the field of resource-orientated physiotherapy, a method which is relevant for RCTs clients. I have continuously attended post-graduate courses in relevant topics and have specialised in manual therapy and body awareness therapy.

Teaching experience:
Lectures have been held at world congresses of the World Confederation for Physical Therapists, at RCT workshops and many other fora both in Denmark and in the South. The main topics have been torture and sequelae after torture, physiotherapy for torture survivors and pain mechanisms.
